Serena Leland has lived in Boulder since 2004. She grew up in the New York metropolitan area, and prior to moving to Colorado, spent many years living, studying, and working in Washington D.C. She also has experience working in east Africa, south Asia, central America and the Caribbean. Serena enjoys working with students and providing them with powerful and transformative learning experiences. She loves supporting students with the opportunity to grow personally, professionally, and academically through their participation in the CU in D.C. program and through study abroad.

Serena earned a master’s degree in International Development from American University’s School of International Service in Washington D.C. She also has a bachelor’s degree in English and a secondary education teaching certificate. Over the past 25 years, Serena’s professional life has had a strong emphasis on social justice issues, and she has been involved in the field of education in numerous capacities. Some of her professional experiences include: serving as a Peace Corps volunteer teacher in Kenya; working for an international education program at Georgetown University’s Center for Intercultural Education & Development; working as a Senior Research Analyst for USAID; managing a study abroad program to India; interning for the training division of a gender equity nonprofit in Washington D.C.; serving as a board member and as the Education Committee Chairperson for a Boulder refugee nonprofit; and working as a teacher and trainer in a variety of contexts.

Serena brings substantial experience and strengths to the CU in D.C. Program and to Study Abroad. She is a natural people person; is highly organized and creative; has a good sense of humor; and has a curious and analytical mind. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys hiking, trail running, knitting, going to flea markets, playing with the family dog, and spending time with her teenage kids.
