Dante in Florence (Florence, Italy)

Did you study abroad as a student? What was your international experience like?

I spent my junior year abroad in Bologna, Italy on a program run by Indiana University. I attended classes at the University of Bologna which were very different from American college classes. All the exams were oral exams, no matter what the class! Bologna is a big university town with a great markets, food, and nightlife. Now my students love visiting the city for the same reasons.

Suzanne MagnaniniWhy should CU Boulder students study abroad?

No matter where you study, the experience of studying abroad will teach you flexibility and the ability to understand other perspectives…skills that will be useful for any major and for solving all sorts of problems.

What are the benefits of studying Dante's Inferno in Florence?

Dante was born in Florence and is one of the city’s most famous citizens. Everywhere you turn you’ll see traces of Dante and his poem, from remarkable frescoes and paintings of Hell to graffiti portraits, from lines of his poems written on plaques around the city to pizzerias and bars named after characters in his Inferno.

What is your favorite Italian food?

Pizza. Definitely pizza.  With gelato as a close second.

What aspect of this program do you look forward to the most?

I love to hear about the students’ adventures, whether from their weekend travels or living in Florence. One of the great things that studying abroad gives you is a lot of great stories and memories.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I hope you'll join us in Florence!
