Prof. Ruth Heisler named Teaching Professor of Distinction

Professor Ruth Heisler, from the Department of Integrative Physiology, was named a Teaching Professor of Distinction by the College of Arts and Sciences last month. Professor Heisler is one of the faculty directors of the Global Seminar: History of Medicine in London, an exciting new program for IPHY students beginning in Summer 2023.

Education Abroad Crowdfunding Campaign

Our office just launched a fundraising campaign to support University of Colorado Boulder students to achieve their goal of studying abroad. Going abroad can be a life-changing experience for students-- read the story of how spending time abroad impacted one Education Abroad alumnus below!

I initially wanted to study abroad because I was having a hard time finding my place at CU; It was my freshman year, and it turned out that college was going to be much more of a struggle than I could have ever imagined. I needed something different, and as it turned out, going abroad was my answer. After a whole year of research, meeting with abroad advisors and convincing the parents, I decided on a semester abroad in Florence. At that time, little did I know that this would just be the start of my adventures abroad.

My experiences abroad mean everything to me. All three [programs] have taught me so much about both my professional and personal life. Professionally, I developed a better understanding of international marketing, sales and cross-cultural communication with both coworkers and supervisors. Personally, I learned the importance of empathy, independence and life-long learning. Overall, what will stick with me the most is hearing the stories of people from all over the world; Even if we live completely different lives, connecting with a stranger over things that make us human made my time abroad so extremely special.

We are working with CU Advancement who has secured a pledge of $15,000 to serve as a matching gift for this initiative. We have featured various student experiences on the campaign page - click here if you’d like to learn more! Gifts will go directly to student scholarships for any of our 400 programs across 65 countries on all 7 continents, helping students gain independence and self-reliance through their Education Abroad experience and opening up a world-wide CU Boulder classroom for students to thrive.

Jessica Yan, Tang Fund Scholar, wins Schwartzmann Scholarship

Jessica Yan, Tang Fund Scholar and CU Boulder participant of the Global Seminar: Discovering Urban China has received the Schwartzmann Scholarship to further her studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing and pursue a master's in global affairs. On this Global Seminar, Jessica went to China for the first time with the assistance of the Tang Fund. Congratulations Jessica!

In Summer 2023, the Tang Fund will support students participating in the Global Seminar: Memory and the Politics of Heritage in Taiwan with Faculty Director Lauren Collins from the Center for Asian Studies.

IDEAS Workshop Resources

The IDEAS workshop, Developing More Impactful Experiential Learning: Best Practices for Faculty-led Study Abroad, was held with the University of Wyoming last month.

WISE Conference

Wake Forest University posts resources from their past WISE conferences, which focuses on developing knowledge and skills for faculty leaders, program coordinators, and administrators who support students in their experiences abroad. Faculty directors are encouraged to explore resources from past conferences when building programs. The upcoming conference will be held February 2-4, 2023, for those who would like to consider attending this year.
