2020 Spring GBG: Global Buffs receive Fulbright awards

Global Buffs Receive Fulbright Awards

The following Global Buffs recently received a Fulbright study/research award:
 

• Erica Ursich attended the Global Seminar: Conservation Biology & Practice in Brazil's Atlantic Forest in Summer 2019 and the Global Seminar: Ecology & Evolution in the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) in  winter 2017-2018. With her Fulbright, she will explore snake conservation in the endangered Brazilian Atlantic rainforest with a local research organization, The Institute for Ecological Research, to document species prevalence and the impact of habitat fragmentation on endemic snakes. 
   
• Remington Ruyle studied on the Global Intensive: PLC Global Issues in Leadership in Panama City, Panama) during Spring 2018.She will pursue a master’s degree in sustainability sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City under the Fulbright.
   
• Ku Thomas participated in the Exchange Program at National University of Singapore in  Spring, 2019 and in the ISA New Zealand at the Christchurch University of Canterbury during Fall 2018. He applied to Fulbright in Fiji to study the medicinal properties of plants used by traditional healers in Fiji. (Ku also won the Education Abroad Student of the Year award in November 2019 and was featured in the fall 2019 Global Buffs Gazette.)

 In addition, the Global Buffs below received Fulbright English-teaching assistantships:
 

•  Zena Jahmi attended the CIEE Morocco: Rabat Language & Culture in spring 2019 and ISA Spain: Granada Hispanic Studies in fall 2018. During her time in Spain with Fulbright, she plans to focus on language and culture with students in the classroom. Additionally, she’ll be able to use her Arabic and Spanish language skills to volunteer with North African immigrants outside the classroom. 
   
• Olivia Wittenberg participated in the Global Seminar: Barcelona Literature & Culture in Spain during the summer of 2017. She has been offered a Fulbright grant to assistant-teach English in universities in Argentina, where she will also conduct research on women’s participation in government and travel extensively.
