CU Boulder Policy Regarding CIEE/ASU Online Courses

CU Boulder CIEE program participants may access a course through CIEE ASU Online. This online course must be in addition to your required on-site CIEE full-time course load and cannot substitute for an on-site CIEE course.  CIEE ASU online coursework functions as transfer credit and not as Education Abroad credit, which means that the process and academic policies for CIEE ASU Online credit will differ from the other coursework you complete on your ed abroad program. See below for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take CIEE ASU online classes instead of CIEE classes?
No, ASU online classes cannot replace CIEE classes or any classes that might be required through a local university. You can only take an ASU online class in addition to your required CIEE coursework. If you are participating in a semester CIEE program, this means you would take at least 12 credits of in-person/hybrid courses (note: some CIEE programs have a higher enrollment minimum), and your ASU Online class would likely add another 3 credits to your course load, meaning you would take a minimum of 15 credits over the semester.

What's the difference between transfer credit & Education Abroad credit?
CIEE and host university coursework completed on an approved CIEE program is considered "in residence" credit. In-residence coursework counts towards the minimum number of credits taken on the Boulder campus needed to earn a degree from CU Boulder. (i.e. the college of Arts and Sciences requires a minimum of 45 hours on the Boulder campus). This coursework is subject to all of the policies outlined on Ed Abroad’s Academic Policies page.

CIEE ASU online classes are considered to be domestic college-level coursework and as such are subject to CU Boulder's transfer credit policies which are overseen by the Office of Admissions. The criteria for acceptance of transfer credit differs from Education Abroad; make sure you are aware of these differences before you register for a CIEE ASU online class.

Before you leave, familiarize yourself with the transfer credit process on the CU Boulder Transfer Credit page. Questions and requests must be directed to the Office of Admissions; Education Abroad can provide no advising or guidance on the transferability of CIEE ASU online coursework.

How will I know if CIEE ASU Online classes will help me fulfill my major/degree requirements?
Before you leave, become familiar with the transfer credit process on the CU Boulder Transfer Credit page. You can use Transferology to assess which CIEE ASU online credits will transfer, and how those courses may apply to your degree requirements.
