We are happy to share the latest Education Abroad (EA) Faculty News, our publication curated for faculty directors of CU Global Seminars and CU Global Intensives. As we celebrate sending students abroad again this spring we are also looking forward to many of our faculty-led programs running in Summer 2021, either on-site (whenever possible) or in a virtual setting (brand-new format in 2021!) | Professor Carol Conzelman wins Best Should Teach Gold Award for 2020 Professor Carol Conzelman, Director of the Democracy and Development Global Seminar in Bolivia, was chosen as one of this year's winners of the Best Should Teach Gold Award for excellence in teaching. Established in 1996 by the Graduate School, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the School of Education, this award recognizes outstanding contributions to higher education at the University of Colorado Boulder. This year's selection committee commended Dr. Conzelman's teaching record and likewise took into consideration the many students who wrote on her behalf: "I can’t think of someone who has had more impact on me as a CU Boulder undergraduate or who better exemplifies the Best Should Teach motto than Dr. Carol Conzelman. Her encouragement has remained unyielding through the years, not only for me, but for my many peers as well. Carol came into my life at a pivotal time as she does for so many young students contemplating who we want to be in this world. Taking Carol’s “Democracy and Development” class opened my eyes to the realities of our world in a way I hadn’t recognized before. Learning about the poverty and inequity in Bolivia, and being in a class environment that challenged us to think critically not only about why it exists but also how we as a society can change it, was a major life experience for me that has since inspired me to be a part of the solution." Dr. Carol Conzelman is a Senior Instructor in Anthropology, International Affairs, and teaches for the Global Studies Residential Academic Program. |

| Professor Nick Villanueva creates new Certificate in Critical Sports Studies Professor Villanueva, Assistant Professor in Ethnic Studies, created the Critical Sports Studies Certificate to broaden students’ understanding of the world of sports. “This (certificate) prepares our college graduates for a career in sports where they have the courage and the knowledge to question: why does this problem exist in my sports? Or why does this problem exist in my team or in my athletic department?” Villanueva explains. “It prepares our graduates to work in a career in sports that makes them conscious of social issues, culturally conscious.” Read More Dr. Nicholas Villanueva is an Assistant Professor in Ethnic Studies, Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies, and Director of Critical Sports Studies. He runs the Global Seminar: The Athlete as a National Symbol in Athens, Greece. |

| Professor Jota Samper's recent TED talk to be part of TEDx Library Professor Samper’s recent talk on TEDxCU: How informal settlements (slums) will reshape the world was selected by TED to be part of the TEDx library on TED.com. Additionally, Professor Samper has successfully undergone comprehensive review in 2020 and was recognized by The Office of Faculty Affairs in its 2020 Faculty of Color Recognition & Celebration as one of the University Colorado Boulder’s faculty of color who have completed a significant career milestone this year. Dr. Jota Samper is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Design and runs The Medellin Practicum/Studio Global Seminar in Colombia. |

| In Memoriam We are so saddened to report the much premature passing of Professor David Shneer, the Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History at CU Boulder. We worked with David regularly over the years as he was a champion of international education. He was the faculty director of the Global Seminar: Justice, Human Rights, and Democracy in Israel which he led in summer 2014. The Global Seminar was one of the many ways David impacted our community so positively. During the seminar, students explored the complexities of democracy, human rights, and social justice in Israel and the West Bank through David’s teaching, as well as a service learning project with non-profit organizations, networking with experts working in areas of social justice, and cultural visits. | Paris Ferribee, Global Seminar Alum, Featured in Fall 2020 Coloradan Global Seminar Gender, Race & Tourism in Contemporary Cuba alum (2016) Paris Ferribee was featured in the Fall 2020 edition of the CU Boulder alumni magazine, the Coloradan. As part of an ensemble piece with other CU staff, faculty, students, and alumni, Beyond a Moment, a Movement, Paris shared her experiences with racism on and around campus in a poignant personal essay: A Blessing and a Curse. | Jacob Reagan, Global Seminar Alum, Receives Prestigious Jefferson Award Jacob Reagan attended the Global Seminar Barcelona Literature & Culture in 2017 and has received multiple commendations over the years. Awardees were chosen for embodying and advancing the ideals of Thomas Jefferson: broad interests in literature, arts and sciences, and public affairs; a strong concern for the advancement of higher education; a deeply seated sense of individual civic responsibility; and a profound commitment to the welfare and rights of the individual. Read More In additional to the Jefferson Award, Jacob was also awarded a prestigious Truman Scholarship, selected as a Rhodes Scholar, the second CU Boulder student to win the award in over 25 years, graduated summa cum laude from CU Boulder with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Political Science, and served as Student Body President from 2018 to 2019. |

Article: Skills Acquired During Study Abroad Linked to U.S. Leadership Positions This article provides a nice summary of, as well as recommendations from a report published by NAFSA: Association of International Educators and US-based economic modelling firm Emsi. That report analyzed millions of job postings and professional profiles in the US in order to determine the connection between studying overseas and employer-desired skills. Read the Article |
| Webinar Recording: Maximizing your study abroad resources: Faculty-led best practices for program flexibility Presented by Neriko Doerr, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and International Studies at Ramapo College and Jennifer Cinti, Assistant Director of Custom Programs at SIT-Study Abroad. The global pandemic has created uncertainty for the field of study abroad. This session highlights how institutions can capitalize on this disruption to their usual practices and rebuild their faculty-led study abroad programs to incorporate best practices from the field to become more varied, integrated, and inclusive.
