Pushing Boundaries through International Education
Czech Republic, by Jackson Xia

Study abroad begins and ends with students pushing boundaries—be they physical, cultural, or academic. Both leaving and returning are processes of growth, as CU students explore another society with different ideas and priorities, often a different language; then bring their new perspectives back to Boulder. 2016 has seen CU Boulder Study Abroad expanding to incorporate new programs, broader diversity in our student base, a record number of Gilman Scholarships, and more.

CU Boulder Study Abroad sent a record 623 students abroad for the spring 2016 semester and we’re on track to match that number for spring 2017. The continued broadening of “study abroad” as a concept has allowed more and more students to customize an international experience to their interests and needs. We are working toward the Generation Study Abroad goal of doubling student involvement in international education by 2020, and we cannot do it alone. Our partners include the Leeds School of Business, which is committed to ensuring that 100% of their students have an international experience before leaving CU. Last year we collaborated with the Student Academic Success Center (SASC) to launch a section of First-Year Writing and Rhetoric with a Spring Break trip to the Dominican Republic, and we are delighted to announce that the course will run again spring 2017.

We have several faculty-led Global Seminars running for the first time in summer 2017 which allow students hands-on experience with their academics. From data collection on Chilean water systems to ethnographic film-making in Indonesia to literary
composition in Ireland, our students have more options than ever to complement their studies at CU Boulder with real-life practice. This includes the return of one of our Global Seminars, Conservation & Indigenous Peoples in Tanzania—featured in this semester’s newsletter—which gets students involved in local conservation efforts.

At heart, this is what study abroad is about: going farther, digging deeper, and connecting with the world on a whole new level.

These new opportunities ensure that a broader range of students than ever before are able to take advantage of international opportunities and represent CU around the world. With that in mind, we would like to congratulate Clement Asante, Eugenia Asuming, Branton Demoss, Kristopher Giltz, Adilene Marquez, Joana Ospina, Alejandra Portillo, Lillian Poush, and Dana Yost as they become the largest CU cohort ever to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship for study abroad.

We will continue to pioneer ways for our students to push outwards, to expand their education through global connections and prepare for a career in a global society. It is with great pleasure that we announce that, starting January, 2017, our office will officially be renamed Education Abroad. We hope to use this shift as a continuation of our overall mission: to offer high-quality, culturally-rich international opportunities for CU Boulder students; knowing that it is through this process that we connect cultures, empower participants to take charge of their educations, and enrich both our local and global communities.
